Tucked away behind the Inkerman Hotel lies a converted warehouse. A mothership, if you will, where five piece group Interstellar Gator gather to study the tunes of Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Mac Demarco, The Black Keys and Tame Impala.
Interstellar Gator stake their claim to a space echo rendition of hazy, flanger-pedalled indie rock, with a discordance between sweet melodies and distorted kick-you-in-the-face guitar riffs.
The brainchild of singer/songwriter Zak Fleisher, the band formed as he found himself looking to launch from Perth’s insulated music scene, setting up homebase in Melbourne.
Originally performing under the name ‘Questionable Steeze’ the band took its first steps as a quartet, with bassist Tyrone Sudarski. rhythm guitarist Zac Braun and drummer Michoel Moshel playing Fleisher’s solo material at a raft of rooftops and pubs around Melbourne.
In 2018, the group took a step back from playing, writing fresh material and recording their first EP at Halfway Records. This led to a fateful weekend of sound mixing at Head Gap studios with Finn Keane where everything clicked for the Gators. Kota guitarist Jack MacDonald jumped on drums and singer Elijah Swart slotted in to form the final piece of the puzzle.
The band’s first release Stress Free Consultancy featured on a TV ad for Energy Australia and the group has no intentions of slowing down, with plans to release a debut album that’s out of this world.
